Hypnosis FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

  • At its core, hypnosis is a state of deep, focused relaxation—a natural part of our daily experience. We often enter this state without even realizing it, like when we become engrossed in a book or lost in thought.

Think of hypnosis as a way to filter out the noise of the conscious mind, allowing greater access to the subconscious—the powerful 'supercomputer' running behind the scenes. This state helps quiet the analytical left brain, bypassing the mind's critical filter to reach the subconscious, where emotions, habits, and deeply rooted patterns reside.

Hypnosis isn’t about creating something new—it’s about revealing what’s already within you. By accessing these deeper layers of the mind, we can uncover the root causes of behaviors, habits, or emotional challenges that may no longer serve you. Once these roots are identified, hypnotherapy techniques gently help release them, allowing for new, healthier patterns to emerge.

This process promotes lasting transformation by integrating new insights in a safe and supportive way. The subconscious mind holds tremendous healing potential, and hypnosis allows us to tap into those natural resources for profound emotional and physical well-being.

Despite how hypnosis is often portrayed in movies or on stage, it’s a collaborative, voluntary experience. You remain fully in control throughout, choosing to engage as deeply as feels right for you.

Recognized by the U.S. medical community since 1958, hypnosis has been effectively used to manage chronic pain, create anesthesia, and treat psychogenic conditions, proving its value as a powerful therapeutic tool.

  • Yes, absolutely. Hypnosis works for my clients often when everything else has failed.

Because hypnosis is different, you can expect different results. We love our conscious thinking mind, but if it could solve the problem you're having, it would have by now! So rather than lean into our conscious thinking mind to solve the problem, hypnosis helps us tap into the power of your subconscious mind where memories and emotions are stored.

Hypnosis has helped millions of people change problem behaviors and improve their lives.

Hypnotherapy has been recognized as a powerful, effective, and therapeutic technique by the American Medical Association (since 1958), by the British Medical Association, (since 1957), and by the American Psychological Society.

Hypnosis can help you change habits, reduce the sensation of pain, get better sleep, increase motivation, and help you heal from past experiences

  • Yes, of course!

Hypnosis is a normal and natural state of mind that everyone experiences regularly.

For example, you enter a hypnotic state when daydreaming, or when captivated by an enjoyable movie or a good book.

Actually, it's such a normal state of mind that most people don't realize they are hypnotized.

It's also important to know that hypnosis is an "opt-in" state - meaning, you can only be hypnotized by another person if you want to be hypnotized, and can not be hypnotized against your will.

If you do want to be hypnotized, you just need to be willing and able to follow gentle instructions for reaching a state of focused awareness.

  • Yes! Anyone with normal or higher intelligence who is willing to follow instructions can benefit from hypnosis, including teenagers and children.

  • Hypnosis is safe - it's a perfectly normal and common state of mind we go into naturally everyday.

You enter hypnosis regularly when daydreaming, watching a good movie, or reading a book.

During these activities you remain consciously aware and in complete control,  just as you do when a professional hypnotherapist assists you in entering into a state of hypnosis.

  • Most people start noticing positive changes after the very first session, and on average, 5-6 hypnosis sessions will effectively address most issues.

Each hypnosis session generally lasts about 90 minutes (+/- 15 minutes).

Sessions are generally scheduled one per week, so I help my clients over 5-6 weeks on average.

As your hypnotist, I will be guiding the process, but it's important to understand that you make the changes by actively participating and using the power of your subconscious mind.

We will always start off with a hypnosis consultation, where I can get to know you and the issues with which you'd like help.

From here, if I believe I can help you, I will let you how many sessions it will take to get you results, and the total cost for all sessions.

  • I do not accept insurance. Most companies won't pay for hypnosis, but a few do, including Blue Cross. All sessions are an out of pocket expense.

I do accept HSA (Healthcare Savings Account) and FSA (Flexible Spending Accounts). But I always advise clients to check with their provider first, because not all consider hypnosis a reimbursable expense, and you may have to repay it. However, in my experience they do cover HSA and FSA (I just can't guarantee it). Both are insurance based programs that are paid into with pre-tax dollars. I provide all invoices and receipts to make it easy for you to get recovery from your insurance provider if they accept it.
